Things I’m Loving

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Happy Friday!  I’m headed over to the ASID Showcase Home for the last weekend of tours. I can’t believe how the past month has flown by!  I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to tour the house and support our organization as well as the charities that benefit from this event.

I wanted to start your Friday off right with some beautiful things that have caught my eye recently.

First, I watched a marathon of Kitchen Cousins on HGTV recently(one of the few shows on that network I can stand because they do real construction with real budgets and show their problem solving in action. Though I don’t understand clients letting them pick the backsplash with no input.)  I’m impressed with their building knowledge, creative reuse of historic building materials, and well designed kitchens.

I like this kitchen they did for one of the designer’s parents.  They completely flipped the layout of the kitchen, opened up the traffic flow, and utilized a lovely mix of materials. The tobacco stained upper cabinets are lovely.  Mixed with the white lacquer lower cabinets and a handmade Moroccan backsplash, it’s a modern yet eclectic mix. My husband dug the wall graphic on the far wall.

The fact that they do the majority of their work in Hoboken,  NJ (just across the river from Manhattan) makes the show extra special to me since my aunt lived there for decades and I’d spend my breaks during college hanging out with her there. (I went to Vassar College, which is 1.5 hrs north of the city, up the Hudson River.)

These orange accessories would fit in lovely with the concept I developed for my deck (see the post here).  And the nautical hook, blanket and basket seem so perfect for a Cape Cod retreat I can dream of having (though the commute there is rough on summer weekends – round-about anyone?)

This kitchen has a lovely mix of classic white cabinetry and well worn vintage details and an abundance of natural light. The designer really played with scale (the etageres on the back counter, the chandelier) in a unique way that really takes this room beyond the typical.

The color palette, fabric selections, paneling, wall color and high ceilings in this room are so different than anything I’ve seen in a while, and that’s so refreshing!  Look how the designers mixed mid-century armchairs with a Jansen style daybed, French iron side tables and Murano glass lamps with a bone inlay table. What an inviting solarium (though I think any solarium would be lovely with all that light spilling in)!  The rest of this D.C. town house is equally well designed, so check it out if you have access to a copy of the May issue of House Beautiful. Or just click through to the article on HB’s website. The kitchen backsplash is amazingly transformative.

Finally, as promised a few weeks ago, here is the page featuring Fox Interiors in the new Mercury Mosaics catalog!  For more about this local company, see this blog post and their website.

That’s all for this week, or this post would be a mile long.  Next week I’ll share a soon-to-be completed bathroom project that’s ALMOST done and looking fabulous.

Perking Up the Deck and Yard

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Even though the weather in Minnesota can’t seem to make up it’s mind if it should be a cool Spring or an early Summer, the itch to get outside is hard to resist this time of year.

Since the lilac trees are beginning to bloom (meaning the morel mushrooms will be popping up soon!), I’m going to start planning my summer outdoor decor now and remain optimistic that the warm weather will soon be here to stay.

So what items have caught my eye lately?

First I received this email from Crate and Barrel that heavily features this year’s accent color, Tangerine Tango.

and appreciate its beauty. Our new collection transforms your garden<br />
into a secret oasis. Shop now

Cleve Orange Planters $49.95-$89.95

Of course I’m digging the orange watering can and wishing for some orange cushions to liven up my standard stacking outdoor chairs we got at Target years ago. I also love the rustic style of the Driftwood Birdhouse as a foil for the modern boldness of the orange accents.

We already have 2 Emmet Lounge Chairs in green from Room and Board we got from a friend when he moved to San Francisco last summer.  They’ve held up beautifully without any covers this winter, and they’ve been a great punch of color out the windows in the middle of the bleak winter.  So how do I tie the orange and green together?  Here are my inspiration boards showing the current state of the deck (it really doesn’t look like anything special in this photo) and my goal end results.

First off, what does this deck look like now? Well, the top left picture shows it in action the FIRST WEEKEND after we moved in.  Our friend, Tom, was visiting for business so we had no time to wait before playing hosts.  So what do you do? Send the guys off to golf, set up the patio furniture, grill a giant platter of veggies (foreground) and some steaks, open that giant bottle of Heineken beer you got as a gift, and enjoy the company of friends.

Now it’s a year later (almost) and our plans for the deck are pretty settled in our minds.

Step 1: Strip the red stain off the deck and flip/repair any damaged boards.

Step 2: Remove the existing railing.

Step 3: Remove the slanting and shallow depth steps to the yard. (They are tricky for kids and in the winter)

Step 4: Install longer, deeper steps in one location.

Step 5: Install new square posts along the perimeter.

Step 6: Stain the deck, posts and steps a warm gray color.

Step 7: Install a cable rail system around the deck for a more open and modern aesthetic.

Ok, you have that visual in mind now?  Now here is how I’ll furnish the deck, utilizing the existing wood slat table and chairs (seen above).

First, I’ll use our existing umbrella that looks similar to the example above, though it’s in more of a narrow two tone gray stripe pattern.

Then pull the punch of orange I’m craving together with our green Emmet Lounge Chairs by mixing in throw pillows with large botanical prints in orange and green.

Though I’d love to buy the Layered Side Table in orange, it makes more sense in white when placed between the green chairs. I like that the width of this piece easily allows for both loungers to have a spot for their drink AND snacks.

The gray dining chairs will get a punch of orange with the striped throw pillows that pull together the gray colors of the house, deck and umbrella.

The deck, front entry, and garden will all get accessories of their own in the form of large gray planters, a new doormat (it’s a Fox!), stone lanterns along the paths for mood lighting, and sculptural pieces to tuck in amongst the plantings.

Finally, a deep orange watering can will inspire me to help with the gardening duties, which is key since my husband is planting a huge vegetable garden for the first time this year. I can’t wait for all that kale, tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh herbs to take over my kitchen!

Since the Fox doormat is sold out, I’ll be recreating this with the plain coir doormat I already have, a stencil and some paint. Easy peasy!

I can’t wait to get started on all these great projects (after I finish the nursery I’m working on now, of course.)

Trend Spotting – Galleria in Edina

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Out and about last week running errands at the Galleria in Edina my eyes kept being drawn to the window displays.  It seems retailers are embracing the color of the year, Tangerine Tango.

First up, Epitome Papers. Their bright display featuring tangerine, peacock turquoise and crisp white stationery and accessories on a white Parsons table caught my eye and brought a smile to my face. I’m shameless in moments like this and don’t worry what people think when I’m taking a photo with my phone. Inspiration is everywhere after all!

Down the hall at BCBG Max Azria orange and hot pink dresses and separates demand your attention against a bright backdrop. (Notice how they used blue for the backdrop, the complementary color to orange on the color wheel?)  I don’t really have any need for an orange bustier top and skin tight skirt with 4″ high heels, but I can still applaud the fearless application of color.

Just down the hall, Crate & Barrel has embraced the trend in multiple home categories.  First, see the obvious tie in between an orange juicer and juice glasses with oranges above.  I don’t squeeze fresh juice except for homemade lemon bars, but that juicer in the perfect shade of orange almost convinced me I needed one.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the home furnishings section they went all out with an orange and chocolate brown bedroom display. Most people would be afraid to buy a chair in orange, but I think it’s a great way to add impact to a space. Go neutral with your sofa, but why not add a punch of color beyond the throw pillows?

If the chair is too much, start with a lamp like the one above. It will help carry the color palette around the room.  Or for the commitment phobic, bedding is a great solution. I tend to want a new duvet cover every 2-3 years to add to the mix, especially since my cats LIVE on our bed, thus shortening the lifespan of every duvet.  So selecting a neutral chocolate brown bed and swapping out colorful bedding periodically you can embrace a trend but move on easily when you get tired of the look.

Finally, across from BCBG, Oh Baby! shows how neutral foundation pieces, like the rocker and crib in soft gray, can be brought to life with bold accents. Check out that kelly green bedding in the crib, love it!  And of course you know the orange Moroccan pouf in the center is what drew me in.  They have lots of other color options, see them all here.

Does this take away some of the fear of how to incorporate Tangerine Tango into your life?  Maybe it’s a bright new scarf to brighten your face in your favorite black on black outfit. Just do what makes you smile. And if you hate orange (mom, I’m thinking of you), then be true to yourself and ignore the trend all together.  The key is to have fun and embrace what you love and make sure you reflect that in what you wear and how you fill your home.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Pantone Loves Tangerine Too

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

In case you haven’t been reading the blogosphere fanatically, you might not know that Pantone has unveiled their Color of 2012.

Tangerine Tango is the Color of 2012, and I couldn’t be happier.

Last year’s Honeysuckle was alright, but Tangerine Tango fits in with all the color trending I’ve been seeing the past year.

You know I’m a fan of orange, and this is just the deeper orange range I prefer to play with. No apricot or peach tones for me. Deep saturation? Yes, please.  This is more in the direction of the persimmon color I’m planning to paint my front door this summer.  (I hinted at this in a post about front entries this summer.)

My favorite boxes for stashing supplies are a bold orange.

Boxes by Stockholm from The Container Store.

I just tried to create an image of my house with the updated paint color with the Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer program, but the color rendering was terrible because it layered the color selected over the existing color which dramatically changed how every color looked. Bummer.

Here is one of their stock house photos with the door “painted” SW 6881 Cayenne. I think it would actually be deeper than this.

So I guess this is the closest I can get to showing the paint color ideas I have in mind.

The top color is a deeper persimmon with more red in it.  The middle is closer to the Tangerine Tango. I was doing this in photoshop and couldn’t find quiet the right shade yet.  The gray at the bottom is representative of the direction we headed for the main house color. Right now it’s a sage green the previous owners painted it, which is better than the baby blue it was before that. The majority of the front of the house is brick and the side of the house has a large expanse of white siding, so we have to work with all of that when selecting colors.

Okay, the idea of you picturing a really red brick with this color combination was enough to get me to do more tweaking to an image of the front of my house to get closer to a decent visual of the color palette.  I don’t want my front door this bright, so you’ll have to mentally combine the images to get the right look.  But you can see the gray may end up more gray with a hint of brown in it.

Okay, well you get the idea. I’m happy with Pantone’s color choice and I’m planning on bringing more orange into my life in 2012. Of course trends are trends, and I was already planning on using orange anyway, but it’s fun to see your favorite color get recognition.

Are you an orange fan?  What color do you think should be the 2012 color of the year?

Color Trend – Yellow

Friday, March 25th, 2011

One color trend I’ve been noticing lately: Yellow. Sometimes it heads towards buttery yellow. Sometimes it has a hint of green undertone that takes it slightly towards citrine.

Here are a few examples from the retail sources West Elm, Crate & Barrel and Dwell Studio.

The trend of bright punchy colors is definitely in for spring/summer. Gray, white and navy will always be strong partners for yellow.

And you know what I couldn’t resist when I saw the West Elm summer preview?  (Hint: Check out those vintage style orange kitchen containers in the upper left corner. PERFECT accessory for pulling the orange accents in the adjacent living room into the kitchen to tie the two rooms together!)

Think spring thoughts this weekend and maybe we can wish the snow away and get those spring flowers to pop up at last!

Fall Colors Inspired Palette

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Despite the 70 degree weather we’re experiencing in Minnesota, the trees still know it is fall. Everywhere I look I see the most beautiful mixes of golden yellow, orange, sumac red, green and brown. I couldn’t help but be inspired to create some room palettes to help inspire you as well.

How fun is the orange on the back wall of the white bookshelf?!  What’s great, is that could be changed up easily over the years to a new accent color or fabulous wallpaper since the rest of the room is in easy to coordinate with neutrals. Love everything about this room.

And the bold kitchen with the gorgeous wood lining the walls as well as the floor? A raw stone fireplace surround and sleek red cabinets and stainless steel provide a great balance of color and texture while making their own strong statements.  And the fluffy chandeliers add great whimsy (and texture).

Again, pops of orange on a neutral but texture filled living room. Do you see how this works?  The eclectic mix of furnishings work together because nothing is too fussy. This entry in a more traditional home features beautiful woodwork, which allows that elegant red table skirt with framed detailing really pop. The chocolate brown zebra print stair runner hints at the homeowners playful personality. Using a solid runner for the entry floor prevents that print from overwhelming the space.

Vintage riflery targets as bathroom wallpaper? Brilliant! The shotgun casings encased in a resin toilet seat cover certainly carries out the theme, but seems a bit much for most situations. I like the pops of color in the accessories on this bookshelf as bar cart.

The bold mix of red-orange and lime green in this library conveys the homeowner’s fearless personality. With such high ceilings and plenty of white to balance the bold colors, the room still feels balanced.  Have I used this photo of a vintage red leather chair in front of a glass case before? Probably, since I love the tone of that leather and the simple form of the chair. It seemed a good match for this palette, so forgive me.

I think this really represents those golden yellow and orange tones that so many trees take on at this time of year. A harvest palette, if you will.  I can picture that yellow pom-pom fringe on the bottom of a lampshade, along the side of curtains, or the bottom of a roman shade. Pom-poms are not just for the back of your socks (remember being 10 years old and wearing ankle socks with pom-poms on the back? I do!)  I just flashed back to some pillows I made for a client years ago in a golden yellow cut velvet with braided trim and a ribbon detail that was similar to the materials in the top left photo.

I had to find you a picture after that description! It wouldn’t be fair to leave you hanging.

I love this media room with those inviting chocolate brown velvet couches, golden yellow pillows, and plenty of throw blankets.  Did you notice the bookshelves in the back are orange? Difficult to tell from a photo, but it could even be Hermes orange. What a great punch of color that doesn’t overwhelm because the frame of the shelves has a narrow profile.

Finally, the deep reds of the Sumac bushes make a bold backdrop for two very different kitchens. You can see how it mixes well with orange tones and either dark chocolate brown wood and marble or crisp white cabinetry and stainless steel. I couldn’t resist throwing in the great Weimaraner photo – the chair and the dog both have such great personality!

So that’s your fall inspiration, courtesy of the trees and bushes I see on my drives around town visiting clients and vendors.  What is inspiring you right now? Are you drawn to the fall colors or does another season capture your style best?
