Artistic Wallcovering

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

I stumbled across a link to this new wallcovering from Maharam the other day and just had to share it with you.

Titled “Inthebeginningtimeliesasapresentinfrontofourfeet” by the artist Markus Linnenbrink, it is part of a collection of unique wallcoverings designed by artists for Maharam.

I recognized this artist’s work when I saw the detail shot (the first image is an installation shot).

When I had the pleasure of visiting the Sub-Zero/Wolf training program in Madison, Wisconsin (my childhood home town) a few years ago I was most struck by their use of large scale canvases by this artist throughout the facility.  The texture and colors of these pieces are amazing in person.

So I’m loving the idea that I could have a piece of that in my own home!  I think this would be a brilliant accent wall treatment in a kid’s room that could easily transition through every favorite color phase and still work. I would hope it would inspire creativity and experimenting with different artistic techniques. It would be just as cool in a toddler’s room as in a teenager’s.

What do you think? Could you live with a print like this? Where would you put it?

Darling Girl’s Bedroom

Friday, April 29th, 2011

When I saw this photo of a bedroom perfect for two young girls (or one girl who likes to have sleepovers) I couldn’t resist sharing it with you!

Serena &  Lily started out with a line of bed linens for nurseries and children’s rooms.  Over the years they have expanded into bedding for adults, furniture and accessories.  This headboard is great because you could just as easily order it in another color for a very adult bedroom.  Stay tuned for my concept board for an adult bedroom featuring this bed!

Bar Cart Styling – Vintage or Reproduction?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Flipping through the latest Pottery Barn catalog I spotted this table designed to serve as a large bar cart console.

The Markham Bar Console has a great vintage styling meant to look like you found it at an antiques shop and added a towel bar and bottle opener to convert it into your own bar station.

I knew I’d seen a similar style bar table before and a quick scroll through the visual archives in my brain reminded me that Thom Filicia (of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Dress My Nest fame) has a similar table in his lake home.

I did a quick search on the internet (faster than flipping through my hard copies of design magazines to find the original photo, which was featured in the now extinct but fabulous Domino magazine, August 2008)  and quickly found the following image.

What do you think of the similarities? Obviously the scale of Thom’s table is longer, but the feet, thicker ends to the top, and lower shelf with high sides are all very similar. I’m sure there are many old work tables like this to be found in old shops, and the details aren’t particularly unique to this one table.  Nonetheless, I can’t help but think that the Pottery Barn design team was inspired by Thom’s vintage find when they designed their own piece.

I think both are nice tables, and I’d love to have a table like that in my house when we entertain since everyone ends up in the kitchen and this would pull them out into adjacent rooms. But I always prefer an authentic old piece whenever possible because the patina of true wear and tear can never be matched in a factory. Of course finding an old piece like this would take a lot of work, but that’s the fun part for me – the victory of finding just the right piece and the story that comes with it (both it’s history and the story of your quest.)

By the way, does this remind anyone else of the Friends episode where Ross and Rachel both buy the Pottery Barn Apothecary Coffee Table and Rachel tries to convince Phoebe that it’s vintage and she found it at a flea market since Phoebe doesn’t like mass produced furniture?  Yeah, I know you remember it too!

So what do you think?  Would you buy the Pottery Barn version or try to find a vintage table of your own? Or would you prefer a totally different style bar cart?

The beauty of organic wood forms

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

This wood table caught my eye and I just had to share it with you.

Organic wood forms have been a trend for a few years now, ranging from dining room tables and headboards made out of one solid slab of tree with the curving edges left as is to side tables made from small branches bundled together.  Here are some examples since showing you a photograph is easier than describing them in detail.

A slab style headboard

A slab style dining room table

Bundles of branches as a side table

But the cross sections of trees that make up the top of this table are so sinuous that it feels like a fresh interpretation of this trend. The minimal metal base provides a nice contrast to the heavy top.

Do you know what I imagine every time I look at it? A little kid running their hands or small cars or Fisher Price Little People around and around those edges over and over again. That idea charms me because I love design that can appeal to kids and adults of all ages.

How do you feel about this trend? Do you have any pieces of furniture or accessories in your home that follow this trend?

Minneapolis Home & Garden Show

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

This weekend is the spring Home & Garden Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  I’ll be hanging out at the Mercury Mosaics booth (Booth #2721 – about a third of the way in from the right end of the hall) this Thursday through Sunday talking about gorgeous locally made handmade tile and how I can help you incorporate it into your project.

I hope you’ll stop by and visit me, even if you aren’t planning on doing a project in your home anytime soon.  The tile also can be used for mirrors, art panels, fireplaces and lots of other non-traditional applications.  Plus after looking at countless window, roofing, siding, and appliance vendors, you’ll be grateful for the splash of color and pattern that Mercury Mosaics tiles provide your eyes.

I’ll be there:

Thursday March 3rd 4-9pm (that’s today!)

Friday March 4th 4-9pm (come meet Mercury Mosaics owner Mercedes in person!)

Saturday March 5th 11-5pm

Sunday March 6th 11-5pm

For more details and discounted tickets be sure to check out the Home & Garden website: http://homeandgardenshow.com/ME2/Sites/Default.asp?SiteID=540629B6F3C246A5A96B1550BC226A6A

the perfect glow

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Have you ever tried to find a light fixture and felt overwhelmed by all of the options out there?  Well imagine having access to every lighting catalog out there, and then try not to hyperventilate.

That’s why it is so important to have a great lighting team to work with that knows every catalog they have and where they are most likely to find that fixture you have in your mind but aren’t sure really exists.  My favorite local resources (in alphabetical order) are CitiLights Lighting (across from the Basilica in downtown Minneapolis), Filament Lighting (on Excelsior Blvd in St. Louis Park), and Lappin Lighting (in the warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis).   They all have great staff that know their products and are fun to work with.

But sometimes you see a light fixture in a magazine and you just know it’s the one. You start daydreaming about how it would totally transform that boring front hall.  Often lighting ends up being the last thing we select on a project so that it fits well with all the other players in the room. But sometimes a fixture is so special you just have to go for it and build the room around it.

When I saw these gorgeous photos in Elle Decor recently I had one of those daydream moments.  The photography shows off these fixtures so beautifully and it’s rare that you get to see how they cast light in a pure setting like this.  But which one to pick?  I’m a kid in a donut shop who can’t just pick JUST ONE thing (candy is nice and all, but there are so many yummy types of donuts, scones and croissants!)

Drool. I  love how it pops against that dark background! The modern asymmetrical shape could work as an unexpected touch to make a traditional room feel fresh.

Not usually my style, but it’s a fun spin on a chandelier with a more casual vibe.

Hello gorgeous! I love the Moroccan vibe of the top light. And is it just me, or does the bottom light remind you of a donut (in a really good way)?

Clean, simple and chic. Thomas O’Brien gets it right again (the clip on desk lamp at the start of this post is another of his designs).

Aren’t the patterns on the wall and floor amazing?  Think how magical these shadows would look in a dining room or bedroom at night.
